The Future of Essentialista

For as long as I can remember, I’ve always loved to create. Whether it be when I was 6 years old and asked my aunt to teach me how to sew, or later in life when I renovated my first home, I’ve always had a longing to work with my hands – to let my mind wander, dream up something beautiful, then create those visions into a reality.

Over the years my interest in mediums has changed. I’ve dabbled in sewing, photography, graphic design, and interior design just to name a few. But it wasn’t until the last few years that I became super intrigued by digital editorials, blogs if you will. I’ve always loved flipping through physical magazines, but the endless aisles of the digital world never cease to amaze me with a never-ending supply of inspiration. And it’s not just the inspiring words of the author, but the graphical elements that light me up – the layout of each page, the photography, the overall vibe, all offering inspiration for my ever-curious mind.

I had always loved the idea of creating a blog, but I never thought I was cool enough to have one, well, because of the girl next door named Imposter Syndrome. Ever met her? Yep, all the doubts ran through my head. What would I write about? And who would even read it? I also had zero desire to try and achieve “influencer” status and gain a blue check mark. Nonetheless, I started a list on my phone of writing prompts that interested me and after about 6 months of compiling my thoughts I found myself with a long list of ideas mostly focused around minimalism and simple living, clearly a passion of mine.

Then it hit me. One day in the fall of 2022 I had a lightbulb moment. Inspired by my sister and friend who were crushing the girl boss movement and running their own businesses, I thought to myself if I owned a business then it would be naturally appropriate to have a blog as part of my website, and what better pairs with minimalism than a professional home organizing business! I’m great at organizing, I thought, I could help others do the same. So off to work I went setting up an LLC, developing a website, and mapping out my services.

It’s now been almost a year since I officially launched my home organizing business, The Essentialista. I’ve had a lot of fun helping clients clear the physical clutter in their homes and reorganize their spaces. And I’ve learned a lot along the way about what it takes to build and run a small business. It’s no small task let me tell you that! But if I’m being completely honest with myself, the part that I’ve loved the most through this entire process is the brand creation – ideating the perfect name, designing the logo, and crafting editorial content that sparks my interest, not the actual organizing part.

What I’ve come to realize is that with every new life chapter we go through, comes evolution and growth. Sometimes you find what you’re looking for and sometimes it takes a little trial and error. But I’ve finally found the new chapter I’ve been looking for – coming back to the roots of what makes me, me. So moving forward, if you catch me on a good day and ask me to help organize your kitchen, I just might say yes. But for now, I’m hanging up my organizing hat and turning my attention to what I wanted from the very beginning, to create.

If you’ve been following along and want to keep up with all the exciting stuff I have in store for this new space, I encourage you to join my newsletter, so you’ll never skip a beat. Until then if you’re looking for me in 2024, I’ll likely be posted up on my back patio, tinkering with new web designs and journaling about ideas that light me up. I hope you also take the time to discover something that fuels your soul, whatever that may be.

P.S. If you’re wondering what the heck essentialista is, I unpack that here.
